Our Programs

Mock Trial

The Mock Trial is Ohio’s largest academic competition and was developed by the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE) with support from the Ohio State Bar Association, Ohio Supreme Court, and the Attorney General’s Office. High school students, in teams, participate in a trial as “attorneys” and “witnesses.” The Huron County Bar Association has hosted the district competition every February for a decade. Judicial panels of three local attorneys judge each trial and present awards for best attorney and best witness. In 2010 our Common Pleas Judges and Municipal Court Judge allowed nine area teams to try their cases using all the courtrooms in Norwalk.   You can find out more about the program at http://www.oclre.org/MT/

If your school is interested in participating in this program; if you are an attorney who would like to assist in judging the competition, or advising an area team, please contact the new Mock Trial Chair:

Dial-A-Lawyer

In celebration of Law Day 2010 the Huron County Bar Association again offered free anonymous legal advice to callers.

Four call screeners and six attorneys handled 101 calls over four hours.

This was a 146% increase in calls from the 2009 Dial-a-Lawyer program.

THANK YOU to Tucker Abstract & Title Company, Inc. for allowing us to use its facilities for this program.

Estate Planning for First Responders

The Bar Association and the Huron County Probate Court sponsored a new program in 2009.  Free estate planning services were offered to first responders and their spouses, who live and work in Huron County.  Each Qualified First Responder and their spouse, who followed through with the program received wills, living wills, financial and health care powers of attorney, and other instruments drafted to meet their needs. Eight members of the Huron County Bar contributed their services.
